Dear LaSalle Families,

We would like to mark this date in your calendars so you save it for a wonderful new LaSalle event: The LaSalle Spring Festival (a.k.a. Chinese New Year), which will take place on Wednesday February 7, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.

We will be holding our first evening celebration of the Chinese New Year, including performances by all students in the Chinese program at LaSalle, and professional Lion Dancers from the Chicago Chinese Cultural Institute!

We are holding the celebration a few days before the actual Chinese New Year because we are excited to include the students from our Chinese partner school, the Beijing Foreign Languages School, who will be visiting Chicago at that time. In addition to the performances, we will also be serving light refreshments.

There will be a variety of fundraising activities to launch our campaign to help fund a second Chinese teacher at LaSalle next year. LaSalle has been amazingly lucky for the last two years. Through a grant awarded by the Teachers of Critical Languages Program (TCLP), funded by the U.S. Department of State, we have hosted two teachers from China, fully funded, including housing. Unfortunately, but understandably, it is only possible to receive two years of this very generous grant. It may be possible to stay in the program, however we will need to raise the money to finance a potential TCLP teacher ourselves, which will amount to a $32,000 plus housing costs. TCLP will still cover the costs of recruiting and health insurance.

We are confident that we will be have a good chance of staying in the program if we can raise the money to support a TCLP teacher. However, If we are unable to do this, we will not be able to have a second Chinese teacher. This would mean that we have two full time teachers in Spanish, French and Italian, but only one in Chinese. Mandarin would go back to having split grade level classes with thirty students per class like in prior years, while all other languages will have one grade level with twelve to twenty students per class. Let’s work together to get our second Chinese teacher funded!

We will need a team of parent volunteers to help Ms. Veitch, Ms. Pan and Ms. Jiang organize this celebration. Please email Ms. Veitch at ( as soon as possible if you are able to help in any way (planning, hanging decorations, ordering supplies, setting up, cleaning up etc.). Once we have a committee formed, we will send an electronic link via SignUpGenius so that people can select ways in which they can help.

We sincerely hope that you will attend the LaSalle Spring Festival and that you will support our campaign to finance a future TCLP teacher. Thank you!!

Support for this celebration was provided in part by the Teachers of Critical Languages Program’s follow-on grant funds. The program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State (ECA), and administered by American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS. Support for the celebration is ls also being provided by Friends of LaSalle. We are very grateful to our sponsors.
Donor's Choose Grant for World Language
We are thrilled and proud to be a 1:1 technology school but suffer from a lack of computers for our world language program. If you would like to help, please consider donating to the Donor's Choose grant Ms. Torres has written for new World Language Chromebooks!

I Care About Eye Care Campaign

**Please see the message below from one of our incredibly caring 8th graders!

Greetings LaSalle community, I am very eager to inform you about the I Care about Eye Care drive. During the winter break I noticed that I had four pairs of practically new glasses that were too small or I outgrew the prescription, so I thought that we could do a glasses drive. We already have around 20 glasses in the office that were never claimed from over the years. Why don’t we use them to make a change? I am happy to inform you that with the Lion’s Clubs help we will be able to send gently used glasses to children in need across underdeveloped countries. But how does this work? The Lion’s club then sends the glasses to a central state location to determine the prescription and size. Then the glasses are sent to children in need in underdeveloped countries. Please help if you are able, drop off your gently used glasses to the school’s office their will be a box available.

Thank you,

Eliana De Bates
