** 5th/6th Grade Families
We are close to the end of the 2nd grading quarter; as a reminder, the quarter ends Thursday, February 1st. There is no school for students on Friday, February 2nd. Please see the FOL newsletter for information about the annual ski trip to Wilmot Mountain.
We are excited to announce that LaSalle will be hosting Grade Level Dinners. Please mark your calendars for Monday, January 29th for our 5th/6th team dinner. This dinner is for parents only, babysitting services for those in need. The dinner is a potluck, so please plan to bring along a small dish to share with other members of your grade level community. Please keep in mind that this dinner is to serve more as a mid-year curriculum night with classroom updates and social opportunities. If you have any questions or concerns that are specific to your child, please reach out to your child’s teacher.

We are starting our topic on multiplying with decimals. The study begins with estimating products and continues using various models and strategies. Finally, we will finish the topic with multiplying decimals using the standard procedures. As a reminder homework from the workbook is due every Thursday and Singapore problem solving is dues every Friday.
We are finishing our topic on integers and rational numbers. We will end the unit with another FAL project that focuses on adding and subtracting integers. After, we will begin topic 3, which is the start of our study of algebra. As a reminder homework from the workbook is due every Thursday and Singapore problem solving is dues every Friday.
We are fully immersed in our survival unit! We are continuing to read Hatchet together, and are reading other survival novels in book clubs. Students are comparing works of text with the same theme but different genres. During this time we are taking note on ways that authors develop compelling novels. Next week, students will be given their next book talk and will be studying vocabulary words from Hatchet.
In our sci/fi and fantasy unit, students are asked to look at how authors use novels to make commentary on the world around them. We are reading The Giver together, and students are reading other texts in book clubs. Next week, students will be given their next book talk and will be studying vocabulary words from The Giver as well as their book club novels.
Students are finishing their unit of study with Ancient Egypt. We are now beginning to learn about Ancient China. We will enjoy having our Chinese teacher come in and share some of her expertise on the subject.
Students are completing their unit on European Colonization, and I have been very impressed with their finished posters as partners are presenting their projects. We will start studying the Industrial Revolution.
Students have been investigating kinetic energy of all particles. We have done investigations to see what happens to air particles are they are heated and cooled, and we have also explored what happens to water particles they are heated and cooled. We concluded the unit by investigating a ring and sphere to see what happens when one is cooled and one is heated. The will be a short assessment this upcoming week on Wednesday, January 31st to wrap up the unit.
Students completed their unit investigation on rocks and minerals, and the assessment was this week. We are ending the unit with an environmental documentary titled “The Last Mountain” which highlights the use of coal as an energy source and the health and environmental impacts this industry has created. We will be moving onto our next unit focusing on erosion and deposition. We will continue to have a weekly quiz once the content of erosion and deposition resumes next week.
